Service Projects

MOTHER’S CUPBOARD COMMUNITY KITCHEN

At least three Brown County Rotarians volunteer every Monday at Mother’s Cupboard Community Kitchen, a nonprofit facility in Nashville that provides hot meals and food pantry 364 days a year to area citizens in need.

Volunteers serve meals, wash dishes, clean the kitchen, and help clients select canned & boxed food from the pantry shelves.

Every Monday from 3:30 to 6:00 P.M. Rotarians help serve up to 150 meals!

TEACHERS WAREHOUSE
524 North Fairview Street
Bloomington, Indiana  47404

Another ongoing community service project involves Teachers Warehouse.  Brown County Rotarians contribute money, school supplies, and labor to the warehouse so that teachers from the Brown County Community School System may “shop” at the warehouse for needed supplies for individual students and for class projects.

Examples of items available at the warehouse are backpacks, glue, paper, books, flashcards, scissors, craft materials, markers, crayons, folders, and teacher guides. The donated items are free to teachers who otherwise would need to purchase supplies out of their own pockets. The warehouse is open every weekday afternoon and Saturday mornings. Brown County Rotarians staff the Warehouse 1-2 shifts per month and represent the club on the Teachers Warehouse volunteer board.

I LIKE ME BOOKS

For several years the Rotary Club of Brown County has sponsored and coordinated a very popular and well-received project called I Like Me books. Through this project each kindergarten child in Brown County elementary schools receives a hardcover book personalized with the child’s name, friends’ names, teacher, school, town, etc. included in the story. Our Rotary Club partners with other community organizations and businesses to financially support this program.

Members from our club personally read the books to the children and give a book to each kindergartener. It is amazing to see the delight that the children express at seeing their names in print and a story about them.

PAVILION DECORATING

The Pavilion in downtown Nashville, Indiana is a popular location for events and for just sitting to watch people. The Rotary club of Brown County assists in its maintenance (cleaning, repair, painting, landscaping), decorating the structure for the holidays, and watering flowering plants during the summer.

SPRING BLOSSOM PARADE

For many years the Rotary Club of Brown County has participated in the annual Spring Blossom Parade festivities, which occurs the first Saturday in May. Rotarians decorate the parade route and lead children’s game after the parade.

Pictured are Rotarians blowing up helium balloon to decorate the parade route and children enjoying the egg toss and pie eating contest.

CENTENNIAL TREES

In celebration of Rotary International’s 100th anniversary, the Rotary Club of Brown County planted 140 trees in the community. Trees were planted at the 4-H Fairgrounds, Brown County YMCA, Brown County Public Library, and along Nashville streets.

Club members continue to maintain the young trees by pruning and mulching each year. Pictured are several Rotarians tending the trees.

ROAD CLEAN-UP

Several times each year, members of the Rotary Club of Brown County put on their work gloves and walking shoes and scour T.C. Steele Road in search of trash. This clean-up activity helps to keep the road to a popular tourist site beautiful.
